There’s something I love about art taking an object we all recognise and completely changing the way we look at it.
This original Splash Spray Can by Mr Brainwash does exactly that.
The spray can is one of the most recognisable objects associated with street art — a tool designed to create the artwork rather than become the artwork itself. Here, that relationship is turned on its head.
Covered in an explosion of colour, drips, splashes and marks, the ordinary metal can becomes a miniature piece of street-art culture in its own right. The chaotic application of paint gives it an energy that feels spontaneous and rebellious, while the physical form of the spray can connects directly back to the world from which Mr Brainwash emerged.
And that's probably what attracted me to it.
It isn't trying to be traditional art. It doesn't sit quietly on a wall. It's colourful, playful and slightly ridiculous — and that's precisely why it works.
Against the scale of some of the larger pieces in my collection, this is relatively small. Yet put it on a shelf, desk or plinth and your eye immediately finds it.
For me, it's a little piece of contemporary street-art history — taking the instrument of the artist and making the instrument itself the art.
The work is authenticated with a hologram thumbprint sticker, providing an important connection back to the artist.
