There are some pieces you buy because you love the way they look.
And then there are pieces that make you stop and think.
Reflection on Mortality is very much the latter.
At first glance, it is beautiful. Roses, butterflies, religious imagery and extraordinary touches of 24-carat gold make it incredibly rich visually. But look beyond the beauty and the subject becomes considerably deeper.
At the centre is the Crucifixion of Jesus, surrounded by imagery representing both life and death. Fresh roses sit alongside blooms beginning to decay. Butterflies — beautiful, but fleeting — represent the transience of life and its continual cycle.
And then there's the skull.
Beneath it are the Latin words:
IN HOC MOMENTO PENDET – ETERNITAS
“On this moment hangs eternity.”
That line probably explains why this piece speaks to me so much.
It's a contemporary exploration of memento mori — the centuries-old reminder that life is temporary and that, ultimately, what we do with the time we're given matters.
Faith. Life. Death. Beauty. Decay. Eternity.
The longer you look at it, the more you discover.
And for me, that's exactly what art should do.
