A brilliantly understated piece of contemporary British art from Grow Up, created around the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023.
At the centre of an almost entirely empty sheet sits an original-style Charles and Diana postage stamp, transformed through two opposing speech bubbles:
“GOD SAVE THE KING”
“NOT MY KING”
The simplicity is what gives the work its impact. Against an expanse of white space, one tiny image captures a much bigger conversation about monarchy, history, loyalty, rebellion and the complicated relationship modern Britain has with the Royal Family.
The work was released with Grow Up’s characteristically irreverent commentary on the Coronation weekend — celebrating the additional Bank Holiday while simultaneously declaring that the BBC would be firmly switched off for the Coronation itself.
This example is number 18 from an edition of just 25, with “18/25” handwritten lower left and “GROW UP”handwritten lower right.
Accompanying the artwork are related materials, including Royal Wedding philatelic material featuring Charles and Diana and Grow Up ephemera, adding further context to the piece and the historical imagery it subverts.
