Early Start

Harry Bunce · 2020/21
No. 9 of 24 · Artist Signed

There is something immediately warm about Early Start. Two of Harry Bunce’s unmistakable rabbits sit side by side, flowers in hand, against a beautifully layered blue background.

At first glance, it feels playful and almost innocent. But that is part of what I enjoy about Bunce’s work. There is always something slightly more thoughtful beneath the surface.

For me, Early Start is about companionship and the beginning of a journey. Two characters sitting together, looking out at whatever comes next. The title itself seems to reinforce that idea — starting early, learning together and having someone alongside you for the journey.

The work is created using a combination of brush and aerosol painting, stencil work and screen printing on recovered 9mm birch plywood. That mixture of techniques gives the piece its wonderfully imperfect texture; something that is far more apparent when you stand in front of the original.

Our example is No. 9 from a maximum edition of just 24, produced during 2020/21 and individually signed by Harry Bunce.

It is one of those pieces that manages to be charming without being conventional — unmistakably Harry Bunce.
