There is something about this piece that immediately makes you smile.
A rabbit sits completely absorbed in a book, its gaze drifting to the left as though something beyond the page has momentarily caught its attention. It has that wonderful quality I find in Harry Bunce's work — apparently simple and playful at first, but with much more going on when you stop and look.
For me, Early Learning is about curiosity.
We spend our childhood constantly asking questions. Why? How? What happens next? Yet somewhere along the journey into adulthood, it's remarkably easy to stop asking them. We become comfortable with what we know and sometimes forget how much there still is to discover.
That's what I see when I look at this piece.
A character surrounded by colour and noise, book open, still looking, still wondering, still learning.
And perhaps that's the lesson.
Some of the biggest changes in our lives begin with something incredibly small — a question we haven't asked before, an idea we haven't considered, or simply turning the page.
This piece is particularly special within The Allun Lewis Collection because it sits alongside our other Early Learningwork. Both come from exceptionally small editions, with this example being No. 2 of only 12.
Together, I think they tell a wonderful little story.
Not simply about childhood or education, but about something that should never really leave us:
Curiosity. Discovery. And the willingness to keep learning.
Because however old we become, there should always be another page worth turning.
