There is something wonderfully simple about this piece at first glance.
A rabbit. A book. A vivid pink background.
But, as with so much of Harry Bunce’s work, the longer you look, the more the apparent innocence begins to give way to something else.
For me, Early Learning (Left) is about curiosity.
Before we're told what we're supposed to think, what we're supposed to believe, what success should look like or even what is supposedly possible, there is that wonderful period when we simply want to discover things for ourselves.
We read. We ask questions. We explore.
And perhaps one of the great challenges of getting older is making sure we never completely lose that.
That's what I see when I look at this little character completely absorbed in his book. The world around him is loud, colourful and chaotic, yet his attention is somewhere else entirely.
He's learning.
There's another detail that makes this particular work especially meaningful within our collection. Harry produced no more than twelve examples of Early Learning (Left) — and ours is number one.
The first of twelve.
It's a small inscription in the corner of the artwork, but as a collector, there is something rather special about owning the very first piece from such a small body of work.
And perhaps that's rather appropriate for a work called Early Learning.
Everything has to start somewhere.
